Living The Dream

Hannah

What was the first country you visited? Who with and why did you choose it?

Our first ever international trip together was Jamaica in March 2007. It was our first year out of college, and few friends were still in college. We wanted to get away for "spring break" and escape the winter weather in Wisconsin. Jamaica ticked everything we were looking for: beach, ocean, sun, warm weather, good food & drinks, and great overall place to relax. We returned to Jamaica in February 2012 for our wedding, as travel addicts & beach lovers we had to have a destination wedding.

When did you start a travel lifestyle? What inspired that change?

Our RTW trip started June 29, 2013 just passed our 250 days on the road. After getting married in 2012 we knew we weren't ready to settle down and start a family. We both had great paying corporate jobs, BUT we were working and working...hardly anytime to enjoy our lives and the money we were making. We made a decision to save hard and leave our jobs behind to pursue our love of travel and see the world.

Do you have a base you travel from? Or is it continuous travel? And why do you choose that style?

We are on the road 24/7, we average about 3 nights a bed. Intially our trip was a 2 year around the world seeing 40+ countries, after 18 countries in 9 months we are starting to go a little slower than planned. We are renting an apartment in Chiang Mai Thailand next month for 23 days, so we can catch up on the blog and sit still for awhile. Moving constantly is really tough, and we hope to have more of a base after our RTW trip.

How do you fund your travel lifestyle? Is it something you do when travelling or are you a saver?

We saved for 1.5 years to fund our trip, and now we live on a stricter budget. Here in Asia we aim for $50-75 a day, but NZ & OZ were around $200 a day. No fancy dinners here, but we still see/do everything we want. We breakout each country costs, that way we can look back when looking for that perfect base.

If you could tell yourself one tip before you started your travel lifestyle, what would it be?

You can buy anything on the road, you don't need to bring the kitchen sink!

We read packing lists after packing lists before our RTW trip. We still managed to over pack, we eventually ended up sending my (Hannah) entire pack home. We know live out of 1 checked packs and 1 carry on.  Our gearlist was embarrassing before, but now we have the perfect amount of stuff on the road with us.

What does "Living The Dream" mean to you?

For us, we are fortunte to be living our dream. We have always "dreamed" of traveling continiously, and seeing the world. We no longer have a 1 week deadline on our vacations, our vacation continues from one destaintion to another. We decide when we want to leave, where we are going, etc. We are living are happier than ever, and wouldn't change a thing.
