Save The Day

Google Maps

After Apple ditched Google maps and started its own map app we were in deep trouble. It was terrible. Luckily it wasn’t long before Google made their own (and better) app.  We use this nearly everyday. No need to purchase those expensive GPSs with car hire, just use your smart phone. And on those occasions where we don’t have a 3G SIM card available, we would just pre-load the maps when we have Wi-Fi in the morning before heading out for the day. The GPS chip in the phone doesn’t rely on the SIM card so it’s super helpful.

iOS Android Free

Speedtest

Fast, reliable Wi-Fi is very important for us and anywhere we go this app lets us know within 60 seconds whether we want to stay.

iOS Android Free

Google Translate

Tell it what you want to translate and let it type it up for you. This has come in very handy for buying medication at a pharmacy more then once. There are some things you don’t want to play charades in front of other people.

iOS Android Free

MapsWithMe

Google Maps only works really well when connected to the Internet. This map works without an internet connection. Just download the country you’re in (that does need an internet connection), and use it wherever you are.

iOS Android Free

iOS Free

Flashlight

Don’t need to carry a torch with us when we have our phone. It’s great for getting in the house when you forget to keep the light on.

iOS Android Free

Word Lens

Translates foreign language signs into English for us. So instead of typing out the phrasing we can take a picture of the menu and know what we are up for. Sometimes this can take the fun out of a new place, so use it sparingly.

iOS Android Free

Appbox Lite

The perfect conversion calculator since the US use gallons and miles instead of the correct litres and kilometers. :p
