How To Get the Most Out of a Vacation to the US

When booking a trip to the US, there’s a lot to consider. The States is a vast country with many different climates, cultures and landscapes. Almost nothing is off the table in the US, be it a skiing trip or a glamorous beach holiday in an upscale resort.

When planning to travel to the United States there are some things to consider in order to get as much out of a single trip as possible.

Where to go?

Where to go is perhaps the most difficult choice to make. We can divide the country into different regions, but even crossing just one state can take all day. For example, to get from San Diego to Sacramento - of which both are in California - it takes 8 hours.

Transport

So, unless a road trip appeals to you, it’s best to head to a single city. If you want to visit a second city at all, allow yourself full reign across the entirety of the US by getting an interstate flight.

Activities

The next best way to help decide on where to go is by deciding on what type of holiday you want. If it’s a beach holiday, then there are options on either coast - LA and Miami are two popular options. Plus, Miami has the added bonus of the Florida Keys, which are incredible to explore on a boat.

If you’re looking for a mind-blowing nature park, look no further than Yellowstone and Yosemite National Park. The former is a 3,500 square mile park full of volcanic activity, dramatic canyons, and gushing geysers. Yellowstone is in the northwest of Wyoming, which is fairly far away from the main city attractions but is surrounded by wilderness and hiking possibilities. Yosemite, on the other hand, is within a 7-hour drive of anywhere in California, making it a great place to combine with a San Francisco hotel package.

For culture, New York City is incredible, with an abundance of museums, historical parks, and art. Though, New Orleans tops the list if you want a ton of live music from the birthplace of jazz.

Best time to travel?

The best time to travel to the United States depends on what you want to do and where you’re headed. Summer is from July to September, whilst winter is January to March. However, California and Miami are hot all year round, so don’t let the winter timing of the vacation put you off.

You don’t have to wait until winter to ski, nor do you have to head north. One of the most popular skiing destinations is Breckenridge, in which skiing is best from November through to April.

Final Word

Whilst it's a lot to take in, the point of the story here is to be specific about your visit. This isn’t like Europe, where you go to Croatia just to visit Croatia… You can get from one nature park to a famous beach in a single train journey. With how large the US is, it’s best not to spend the whole time driving and instead decide on a single activity to be the foundation of the trip, then work around this. There are a couple of walkable cities like New York and New Orleans, so there are some options for a more general cultural excursion.
