SafetyWing Nomad Insurance 2.0 Claim Process Revamped

Digital Nomads By

SafetyWing has long been a trusted insurance provider for digital nomads and frequent travellers. It has a well-deserved reputation for low fees, solid coverage, and ease of access.

But there was one weak spot.

I wrote an article about SafetyWing’s Nomad Insurance last year. Most of it was glowing, but it included my experience making an insurance claim when I contracted COVID-19. The process was clunky, although I did eventually get paid out.

Fortunately, SafetyWing has listened to customer feedback and revamped the Nomad Insurance 2.0 claims process.

Why The Change?

The decision to overhaul the claim process stems from a combination of user feedback and industry trends. Many users, myself included, voiced their desire for a more streamlined and intuitive claim process.

Additionally, obtaining new insurance licenses meant that SafetyWing could bring certain claims processes in-house that were previously reliant on 3rd parties.

I’m always glad to hear about changes and improvements happening in SafetyWing because they’re advancing the digital nomad lifestyle, making life easier for people like me, and bringing people from all corners of the world a little bit closer.

Key Features of the New Claim Process

Here’s what makes this news juicy:

Streamlined 100% online claim submission process.

Everything can be filled in via the secure SafetyWing web-based dashboard – no need to download and fill in clunky PDF files.

Submit in less than 5 minutes.

Previously it took me almost an hour to collect all the information, write it out, download PDF forms, copy and paste data into PDF forms, and send it off via a portal that looked like it was built around the same time the Spice Girls landed their first top 10 hit. The new online claim process requests just the most basic information, taking a fraction of the time to compile and submit.

Get reimbursed within 2.7 days.

Getting a claim paid out previously took up to 30+ days. When you’re on the road, and something goes wrong, every dollar counts, and waiting up to a month for a payout on big medical bills has the potential to derail even the best-laid plans. The new claim process puts money back in your pocket in a fraction of the time.

Keep track of claim progress within your Dashboard.

Once I sent off the old PDF claim forms, it was a matter of crossing my fingers, hoping I had put all the right info in the right fields and didn’t make any mistakes. A rejected claim would push me back to square one, and then it would take even longer to get a payout. The new claim process shows the exact status of your claim within the SafetyWing dashboard, so there’s no guessing about what’s going on. That means less time pestering their live chat support for an update and more time lounging in the hammock.

What Is Nomad Insurance 2.0?

Ok, backing up a bit. If you’re not familiar with SafetyWing’s product launched in 2018, this is insurance coverage designed for digital nomads and frequent travellers.

Nomad Insurance 2.0, a major update, was released in October 2023, optionally covering the addition of adventure sports, and theft of electronics (up to $1000 per item).

This new version reduced the claim process from up to 30+ days down to 7-10 business days. A big step forward.

In October 2023, SafetyWing also released mobile apps (iOS, Android) to make it even easier to view coverage, make a claim, and track claim progress.

In March 2024, they added a new feature – “$0 deductable”. This means you can choose extra coverage, so there’s no out-of-pocket expense when making a claim (in return for a slightly higher premium).

Now, the new claims process launched in July 2024 makes Nomad Insurance 2.0 stand out above the competition. I haven’t found any insurance product for digital nomads that comes close.

Step-by-Step Guide to Filing a Claim With SafetyWing Nomad Insurance 2.0

So, what does this new claim process look like? Let me walk you through the steps with screenshots:

Step 1) Log into your SafetyWing dashboard. From there, click the orange “Submit a claim” button on the right side (several personal details are obscured from the screenshot).

Step 2) Choose your policy and click the blue “Start your claim” button at the bottom. If you had more than 1 policy over the years, select the one relevant to this new claim.

Step 3) Decide whether the claim is for yourself or a dependant, and choose benefits as “Medical” (doctors, hospital, medicine) or “Non-Medical” (cancelled flights, stolen electronics, etc), then click “Continue”.

Step 4) Add claim details such as the date of service, country and claim amount. The exact steps from this point are personalised depending on the type of claim you’re making. But the basic info requested includes: what happened, reimbursement details, identification number (such as passport), bank details for reimbursement, and attach any relevant documents/receipts/invoices. Along the way, useful inline tips are displayed so you know exactly what is required from you.

Once you have finished and submitted the claim, the progress can be viewed from the “Claims” link on the left side of the Dashboard.

Easy!

The Bottom Line

SafetyWing has had the best insurance product for digital nomads for years. Now, its back-end claims process has been revamped to match the convenience of its front-end sales and account management process.

I almost want to say I can’t wait to make my next claim with SafetyWing, but I’m not going to invite trouble.

Hopefully, I won’t have to make a claim any time soon, but if I do, I know it’s going to be smooth sailing.
