GigSky eSIM Review: 1 Travel eSIM for Worldwide Coverage

Product Reviews By

When you’re travelling, have you ever dreaded that moment when your mobile data signal decides to take a vacation of its own?

I feel you.

Years ago, I was road-tripping through the United States on a tight budget, hopping between public Wi-Fi networks to navigate my way across the country. I didn’t need a SIM card. I knew better. As I cruised along a dusty country road, soaking in the stunning scenery, disaster struck.

Google Maps crashed.

My pre-saved driving route vanished into thin air, leaving me stranded in unknown territory.

Regret kicked me in the chest.

With no mobile internet connection to fall back on and no civilisation for miles, a knot grew in my stomach. That squirmy sinking feeling.

After panicking for a few seconds, I took a deep breath, rummaged around to find a crinkled old paper map on the back of a tourism brochure, and navigated my way out the old-fashioned way… taking a few wrong turns along the way.

The crisis was averted, but it was a sobering wake-up call that reminded me just how essential connectivity is in the digital age, and there are some corners that should never be cut.

In a connected world where staying online is non-negotiable, eSIMs are quickly becoming the go-to solution for globetrotters and adventurous hobbits seeking flexibility and convenience.

But you might already be jaded from the glossy promises of seamless connectivity that deteriorate into you standing on your tippy toes, phone outstretched, desperate for a waft of internet signal. Or going through the fiddly and frustrating process of installing an eSIM, only to have to repeat it in the next country.

Perhaps you’re new to the world of eSIMs, and have no idea where to start or whose promises to believe.

Fortunately, I’ve found a company that is not your run-of-the-mill eSIM provider.

I tried them on a recent international trip, and discovered a surprising truth.

This really was the one eSIM of Power to rule them all… without the soul-selling trickery.

Let's cut to the chase, and I’ll give you all the juicy details you need to know about the GigSky travel eSIM.

Itchy finger? Can’t wait? Ok, use my referral code “JOSH338” for a bonus US$3 GigSky credit.

Why Choose an eSIM?

Explaining the benefits of eSIM over traditional SIM cards is like preaching to the choir for seasoned travellers. But for the uninitiated, let's break it down.

Imagine you’re bouncing between countries like a pro on a whirlwind trip. You need mobile data to stay in touch. Traditional SIM cards? A hassle. With eSIMs, you ditch the plastic use use the in-built chip within your phone to switch carriers with a tap.

No more hunting for confusing local carriers or hopping on risky Wi-Fi hotspots. eSIMs are like having a pocket-sized magical Middle Earth elf, keeping you connected anywhere.

Whether you're backpacking or jet-setting, cruising or road-tripping, eSIMs are flexible, convenient, and offer real peace of mind.

But what about compatibility? After all, what good is cutting-edge wizardry if your device can't support it?

eSIM Device Compatibility

Thankfully, the list of eSIM-compatible devices is growing faster than a magical steed galloping across Middle Earth. From the latest smartphones to sleek tablets and wearables, chances are if your favourite gadget was made in the last 5 years, it is already on board the eSIM train.

Since its launch in 2016, eSIM technology has revolutionised the mobile and wearable industry, eliminating the need for physical SIM cards and allowing devices to become smaller, thinner and lighter… almost like magic.

When it comes to compatibility, leading smartphone brands like Apple (iPhone XS, XR, and newer models), Google (Pixel 3 and Pixel 4 series), Samsung (Galaxy S20 line-up), and Huawei (Mate 40 Pro) fully support eSIM.

But it's not just smartphones; tablets and wearables are also embracing eSIM technology. Devices like the iPad Pro and Samsung Galaxy Watch enable users to stay connected on the go without the limitations of traditional SIM cards.

Check this up-to-date list of eSIM-compatible devices to ensure your phone makes the cut. If you’re out of luck, then now might be a good time to consider upgrading your smartphone – check out these models.

Who is GigSky?

You've probably encountered other eSIM providers or seen ads for them on social media and YouTube. But GigSky stands out from the crowd. Unlike many others who simply resell services, GigSky is a bona fide network operator – a full MVNO – with partnerships spanning over 400 mobile networks worldwide. This unique position grants GigSky full control over both the eSIM AND network, allowing for faster resolution of network issues and a seamless user experience.

What sets GigSky apart is their innovative approach to connectivity. Customers only need to install a single eSIM once and can use it at any destination. No more uninstalling and reinstalling eSIMs, saving time and hassle. Plus, GigSky automatically adjusts the plan based on your location, ensuring you're always connected wherever you go.

GigSky's robust multi-operator network enables seamless switching between networks in case of outages, providing reliable connectivity even in challenging situations. This was evidenced during the AT&T outage in the United States in February 2024.

But GigSky's reach extends far beyond just land-based networks. They're the only eSIM provider offering service on 190 cruise ships, offshore locations like the Gulf of Mexico and North Sea, and on flights from 20 airlines.

Based in Silicon Valley, the heart of tech innovation, GigSky has been driving eSIM technology forward since its inception in 2010. Their collaboration with Apple since 2014 has led to significant advancements in eSIM technology, culminating in the public launch of the first eSIM-compatible iPhone in 2018. GigSky's partnership with Visa takes things even further, providing complimentary data plans for users with Visa cards from partnering issuers.

GigSky has a strong focus on enterprise clients, including some of the largest global cellular providers in the airline industry. Trusted by dozens of airlines, avionics companies, and even the U.S. Department of Defense, GigSky's reputation for providing mission-critical global data service speaks for itself.

And on the consumer front, GigSky recently made waves with the launch of one of the industry’s first genuinely free eSIMs. I wrote all about it here.

What? A Free eSIM That’s Really Free?

Ah, the age-old question: is anything in life truly free? When it comes to eSIMs, the answer might surprise you.

First, some background. Several eSIM providers offer a "free" eSIM option as a tantalising hook to reel in unsuspecting travellers. But here's the catch: while the eSIM itself may be “free”, there are hidden fees lurking just beneath the surface.

Take activation fees, for example. Some providers conveniently forget to mention the hefty activation fees required to get up and running. And let's not forget about data charges – sure, you might snag a “free eSIM”, but you'll likely pay through the nose for a data plan once you're on the road.

GigSky doesn’t play games. What you see is what you get – no hidden fees, no sneaky charges, just straightforward, transparent pricing that won't leave you feeling like you've been taken for a ride.

Their free 100MB data plan is enough bandwidth to try the service without making any lock-in commitments. No credit card is required. If you’re worried your device might not work or want to see if their network speeds and reliability are up to scratch, follow my step-by-step instructions to claim your free plan. They hope you’ll want to upgrade to a larger paid plan if you like the free plan, but there’s no obligation.

So, if you're tired of playing pricing games with other eSIM providers, it's time to make the switch to GigSky and experience true transparency in action.

Just say ‘no’ to eSIM pricing games.

Global Coverage with GigSky (Including Sea & Air!)

Before you hit that "buy now" button, I want to bring extra focus on network coverage. This is something travellers often overlook because it’s invisible. I’ve been guilty too, just looking for what seems like the cheapest option on paper.

One of the biggest selling points of eSIMs is their ability to keep you connected no matter where your travels take you. But not all eSIM providers are created equal when it comes to coverage – some offer spotty service in remote regions, while others leave you high and dry the moment you step off the beaten path.

Luckily, GigSky is not one to disappoint when it comes to coverage. With a self-managed global network spanning over 190 countries and territories, GigSky has you covered from the bustling streets of New York City to the remote villages of Nepal to soaring above the moonscape that is Cappadocia, Turkey.

GigSky goes further and offers service on cruise ships, offshore (Gulf of Mexico and North Sea), and on flights from 20+ airlines. That is unheard of. No other eSIM provider comes close.

But it's not just about quantity – it's about quality too. GigSky has built a reputation on delivering super-fast data speeds and rock-solid reliability. They actually care as much about your connectivity as you do.

Yep, GigSky works here too.

GigSky eSIM Pricing Plans

What good is a stellar eSIM if it breaks the bank?

When it comes to pricing, GigSky keeps things refreshingly simple. With transparent pricing and no hidden fees, what you see is what you get – no surprises, no fine print gotchas, just straightforward pricing that won't leave you scratching your head.

I’ll be frank. When you compare GigSky's pricing plans to competitors, they are often close or sometimes a little more expensive. But GigSky’s product is premium by comparison, and their network is better – and in this case, you truly get what you pay for.

I learned this lesson the hard way – there are some corners you should never cut.

When your safety and well-being depend on being connected to the internet; you don’t want to scrimp on a couple of dollars.

It’s not worth the risk.

An eSIM is an investment in your security and peace of mind. And that’s priceless.

GigSky’s data plans are organised by destination (country, region, or global), the amount of data you need, and the length of the plan. For example, if you’re going to Thailand, the best options are:

  • 1GB, 7 days: US$5.99
  • 3GB, 15 days: US$14.99
  • 5GB, 30 days: US$23.99
  • 10GB, 30 days: US$45.99

Or if you’re hopping around Southeast Asia, the “Asia Pacific” plan covers 30 countries for:

  • 1GB, 7 days: US$8.99
  • 3GB, 15 days: US$24.99
  • 5GB, 30 days: US$39.99
  • 10GB, 30 days: US$74.99

If you feel inspired by my trip to 16 countries in Europe in just 4 months, then the “Europe” plan, covering 45 countries, will be perfect:

  • 1GB, 7 days: US$4.99
  • 3GB, 15 days: US$13.99
  • 5GB, 30 days: US$20.99
  • 10GB, 30 days: US$37.99

Regional plans mean there’s no need to switch data plans – just step off the plane, train or bus, and you’re online instantly. Nice!

If you’re not sure how much data you need, check out this simple and more complex calculator. If keep a close eye on my Internet usage, I can get down to 2GB per month, but an average month of travelling would require at least 5GB as a benchmark. It all depends on how you plan to use it.

Peace of mind is priceless when you’re travelling.

GigSky Real World Experience

Enough about pricing – let's talk real-world experience. The rubber hits the road. The theory becomes real.

This is what you came here for.

I’m pleased to say my recent week-long trip to Thailand with GigSky was smooth sailing from the time I touched down at Bangkok airport until my departure. While the plane was still taxiing to the terminal, I activated the eSIM, and within 60 seconds, established a 4G/LTE connection.

Beautiful template in Chiang Mai, Thailand.

At first, starting with the free eSIM data plan seemed tempting, but I knew 100MB wasn't going to cut it. I upgraded to the 5GB plan, only to realise it was far more than I needed. Lesson learned: the cheaper 3GB plan would've sufficed.

Network reliability was solid, whether in bustling cities or remote beaches, with download speeds consistently above 20Mbps. Occasionally, there were dips to slower HSPA+ connectivity, but even then, speeds hovered around 13Mbps – not bad for remote areas.

There were zero dropouts or downtime throughout the week, despite my close scrutiny of network stats. And while I might have been nit-picking, the average traveller wouldn't have noticed a thing.

Mobile data is one of those things that you don’t notice when everything is working well… only when it breaks down. And that is exactly what happened in Thailand. The internet just got out of the way and I could focus on being in the moment.

I will gladly use GigSky again on my next international trip.

It's worth noting: GigSky, like most travel eSIM providers, doesn't include a traditional phone number with its plans. But with apps like Facetime, WhatsApp, and Instagram, staying connected is a breeze – no matter where you are in the world.

How To Buy and Activate an eSIM From GigSky

So, you know your phone is eSIM-compatible, and you are ready to try GigSky. Here’s everything you need to know about how to buy and activate an eSIM:

1. Decide on your destination/s. This will determine if you need a plan for a single country (like Thailand) or a whole region (like Asia Pacific, Europe, North America, Caribbean, and Latin America).

2. Consider your trip length. If you’re only travelling for 4 days, there’s no point getting a plan for 30 days (unless you’re a really heavy internet user). If you’re not sure and you like to keep things loose, then choose a shorter length of time (such as 7 days) and you can always top-up your plan later.

3. Think about your data usage habits. Do you just occasionally use Google Maps and send a few work emails? Or do you crave hours of video watching on YouTube? I tend to be in the middle, like most travellers. And about 5GB for 30 days is a reasonable amount. Just remember to keep an eye on your usage so there are no unpleasant surprises (here’s tips for iOS and Android).

4. Time to buy. Now you know what you need, browse to the GigSky website and find your destination on this list, or enter it in the search tool in the upper right corner of the page.

5. Pick your plan. From the list, click the plan that will fit you best and continue with the online checkout. If you don’t have an account with GigSky, you’ll be prompted to create one. You only need to enter your name, email, password and country of residence. Easy!

When creating an account, click the “Referral code” link and enter my code “JOSH338” for a bonus US$3 GigSky credit.

6. Make payment. A payment card needs to be entered (Visa, Mastercard, or Amex). All card information is encrypted and stored in compliance with PCI DSS. Now, complete the checkout process.

7. Install eSIM. Once your checkout is complete, the eSIM is stored in your GigSky account. If you purchased via the GigSky mobile app, it’s just 1 click to start the eSIM installation process (just tap “yes” after your transaction is complete). Otherwise, if you purchased via the GigSky website, you’ll receive an email that contains a link to your personalised QR code for installing the eSIM. The installation and activation process varies depending on the phone operating system and manufacturer. Here are step-by-step instructions for Samsung Galaxyother Android, and Apple iPhone.

Note: You need a stable Wi-Fi connection to download and install the eSIM. You can install the eSIM up to 30 days in advance and only activate it when you reach your destination. No internet connection is required for activation.

All paid plans can be securely purchased via the GigSky website. However, if you’re choosing a free plan, it can only be accessed from the GigSky mobile app (not the website). Download the free app: iOS, Android.

Important: Never delete your GigSky eSIM from your phone, even after you’ve finished using the data plan (unless instructed by the GigSky support team). It can be re-used and topped up in the future. Once deleted, it cannot be undone.

Once you’ve installed your eSIM you’ll feel on top of the world.

What I Like About GigSky

Now that you're well-acquainted with GigSky, let's talk about what sets them apart from the competition.

One eSIM to rule them all. Unlike other providers that are just resellers and can only sell 1 data plan per eSIM, GigSky’s eSIM can be reused over and over again. This makes adding a new destination or topping up with extra data much quicker and easier. Simply open the GigSky mobile app, top up your existing plan or buy a new one with a few taps, and you’re done. No more QR codes and activation links. You still need to manually decide when to activate your eSIM in the phone settings. But everything else is streamlined.

They control the network. Any time you have a problem with other eSIM resellers, they have to contact a local network support team for the country you’re in. These extra layers of communication mean getting solutions take longer. GigSky has full control over the network – they are not middlemen. So, if there’s a problem, it can be fixed much quicker – often without you even realising it.

Duel redundant mobile network. That means almost every country has a fallback network in case things break down. Now, that is peace of mind!

More places to use your eSIM. No other eSIM providers can match GigSky’s global footprint. They cover cruises, offshore and flights.

1 tap install via mobile app. Scanning a QR code can be trickier than you realise if you don’t have a laptop or a second device. In the past, I had to send a friend my eSIM activation QR code via WhatsApp and then scan it off their screen. GigSky’s mobile app makes eSIM installation completely painless, with just 1 tap.

Hotspot support. Some eSIM providers have either dropped hotspot support in favour of “unlimited” plans or vary support from country to country (which can be confusing). GigSky supports hotspots anywhere in the world, so you can share your internet connection between your phone, laptop and tablet, or with other members of your travel group.

Loyalty is rewarded. Earn 5% credit towards future data plans with every purchase made. You don’t have to do anything special, it’s all automatic.

What Could Be Better

No product is perfect, and GigSky is no exception. While their consumer eSIM offering is certainly impressive for a bunch of reasons already covered, there are a few areas with room for improvement.

No live support chat. All enquiries are submitted via a ticket system. Alternatively, you can send an email, or call +1 650 924 9022 (US) or +44 203 608 0394 (UK).

Knowledge base articles. Support articles in the Help Centre are a little sparse and lacking screenshots. Sure, they cover the most important questions, such as installing an eSIM, but other competitors are a little more comprehensive and well-structured in this area.

Web dashboard design is a little dated. It still has all the important functionality, but just not quite as polished as some other eSIM competitors. There seems to be a design discrepancy between the consumer sales website and dashboard. I’d like to see the design become more integrated. To be clear, this really doesn’t affect the website performance or functionality, only cosmetic. I’ve got my nit-picking “Web Designer” hat on.

Data only. Some people like having an old-fashioned phone number. I’m not one of them, but if you need a local phone number for some reason, GigSky ain’t your guy. For the rest of us, WhatsApp, Skype, Instagram, Facebook Messenger, Facetime, Telegram, Signal and any other internet-based text, voice or video app will work fine.

No refunds. If your travel plans change, unfortunately, GigSky doesn’t have a flexible cancellation and refund policy at the moment. Hopefully, that will change in the future.

Slightly expensive. You can’t have everything – there’s always a trade-off between quality and price. GigSky aren’t aiming to be the cheapest eSIM provider – they’re aiming to be the best. But to be honest, a few extra dollars for far superior network coverage and reliability is worth it. Think about how much you’re spending on travel – airfare, accommodation, transport, food. I don’t want to jeopardise all that to scrimp on my lifeline to the outside world. The exception is if you’re travelling in just 1 country for an extended period – 2 months or more. In that case, buying a local SIM/eSIM would be better value – even if it’s a less convenient setup. But for most of us who travel for a couple of weeks at a time or bounce through multiple countries each month, GigSky is a godsend.

Tips To Get the Most From GigSky’s Travel eSIM

Now that you know more about GigSky, how do you get the most out of your eSIM? With a little know-how and a few expert tips, you can take your travel experience to new heights.

Try it for free first. GigSky is one of the only eSIM providers that provides a truly free data plan. If this is the first time you’re using an eSIM, then there’s no risk to try it out and get familiar with installing and managing your eSIM. It’s far better to learn now from the comfort of your couch rather than on the side of the street in a foreign country. Ahem, that happened to a friend of mine. Yeah a friend.

Never delete your GigSky eSIM. Unlike other eSIM resellers, GigSky allows you to reuse the same eSIM in different countries. All you need to do is set up a new data plan via their app or website.

One app to rule them all. Once you've chosen your plan, download the free GigSky app from the App Store or Google Play Store. This handy app makes it easy to manage your account, track your data usage, and purchase additional data as needed.

Watch your usage. Go to the “My Plans” tab within the GigSky app to find out how much time and data you have left on your current plan. I habitually check this every evening before going to sleep while I’m travelling, and top-up when running low. Also find out which apps are using the most data. Check out this article for data usage tracking tips.

Buy in advance. You don’t drive your car until the tank is completely empty, leaving you stranded on the side of the road. Don’t do the same on your phone. Anticipate your usage and purchase additional data ahead of time. You can even buy your GigSky eSIM up to 30 days before your trip.

Check network coverage ahead of time. If you’re planning to head out of the city on a road trip, take a look at this comprehensive LTE network coverage map from industry body GSMA. Just enter your destination country and try a few of the bigger network operators to see if there are any dead zones along your route. Chances are you’ll be fine, but it pays to plan ahead.

With these handy tips in your back pocket, you'll be well-equipped to make the most of your GigSky eSIM and stay connected on the go like a pro.

With GigSky you are ready to go anywhere.

The Bottom Line

Now you know the true power of GigSky's eSIM technology, little hobbit.

You’ve got everything you need to embrace the future of stress-free travel.

So, dear adventurer, take heart.

Thank you for a most informative article.  I really appreciate all the information you presented in a clear and concise fashion.
I do have one question (assuming this site is monitored for Qs):
if I am going to be traveling in several countries (all GigSky covered), with multiple modes of usage (on a GigSky covered flight, on land, and on a GigSky covered cruise line, does it matter where I sign up for the e-sim purchase?
For instance, if I purchase the e-Sim under the Italy option, will it automatically transfer and work on the cruiseline (which I really care about) as well as the flight (which is less important), or must I purchase e-sim under the cruise line option?
