Did you know Josh and I have never been to the Gold Coast. It's one of those things when you live in the country you will go... one day. A little more excited after reading Ellie's post.

As summer winds up in 2015, the Gold Coast starts settling down. With the Schoolies crowds long cleared out and the working population back to the daily grind, a late summer getaway to the Queensland coast is just the ticket to start 2015 off with a bang.

Here are five reasons to book a getaway to the Gold Coast.

1. Sun, sand and surf

There’s a reason it’s called Surfer’s Paradise. Queensland’s premier holiday destination boasts some of Australia’s best beaches, balmy weather all year round and enough wave breaks to keep you busy all summer long.

With beautiful beaches from coast to coast, and an urban jungle just beyond the sand, the Gold Coast has everything you could possible need for the ultimate domestic getaway.

Whether you choose the centrally located Surfers Paradise, Broadbeach Waters and Mermaid Beach, or Miami or Palm Beach to the south, you’ll be guaranteed a great holiday full of sun, sand and surf.

2. Shopping for miles

When we said the Gold Coast was an urban jungle, we meant it! Shopping in this holiday destination is like nowhere else in the world. With the Paradise Centre – one of the largest shopping centres in the region – located right on the corner of Surfers Paradise Boulevard and Cahill Mall.

The Paradise Centre boasts a range of shopping outlets, supermarkets, dining and other facilities. And if you’re looking for a shopping experience that feels a little more homemade, the Surfers Paradise Beachfront Markets are open every Wednesday, Friday and Sunday nights.

Further south, the Broadbeach Art & Crafts Markets are at Kurrawa Park on the first and third Sunday of every month, all year round. Likewise, the Coolangatta Art & Crafts Markets take place at Queen Elizabeth Park on the second Sunday of each month. No matter where you choose to stay on the Gold Coast, there will shopping outlets and bargains to be found everywhere you turn.

3. Australia’s best theme parks

It’s no secret that the Gold Coast is home to the most popular theme parks in Australia. From Sea World, Wet ’n’ Wild, Dreamworld and Warner Bros. Movie World, to some of the natural wonders of the Gold Coast, including Tropical Fruit World, Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary, Tamborine Rainforest Skywalk and more.

Experience the highs and lows of Australia’s best roller coasters, take a splash at Wet ‘n’ Wild or take a look at the native Australian wildlife hiding further inland. You can make a day, a week or a month of it.

4. Luxury accommodation

When you’re planning a summer getaway, short or long, finding the right luxury accommodation is a must-have.

Our recommendation would be the InterContinental Sanctuary Cove Resort. A favourite for Gold Coast holiday accommodation. It's located 25 kilometres north of the Gold Coast, away from the hustle and bustle of the city.

It's 5 star accommodation with a range of luxurious resort facilities. You’ll find everything you need – and more.

If you are hoping to stay in other parts of the Gold Coast during your stay I can recommend a few others, just leave me a comment!

5. Events like no others

The Gold Coast is home to an active and varied events scene, with a special focus on the great outdoors, competitive sports and food and wine.

In 2015, the Gold Coast Food and Wine Expo, Scoot Burleigh Pro and Sand Safari – Australian Sand Sculpting Championships are just a few of the events wrapping up in summer.

Ellie Cassowry lives and works in Queensland. The beach is her second home. She is an inspiring writer and does most of it oceanside whenever the weather is clear. Which is often.
