Coast vs City: Top Holiday Destinations in Mexico

Mexico is a country of many contrasts…

On one side, there are dreamy coastlines, drenched with sun and white, powdery beaches. On the other, vibrant cities filled with fascinating culture and world-famous cuisine. Although vastly different, both are equally compelling, so the challenge is deciding on your perfect holiday!

Coastal holidays

Mexico’s coastline is among the most popular destinations in the world for beach holidays, and it’s not hard to see why. With the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea around it, the country boasts a whopping 9,330-kilometer coastline.

Beyond the clear Caribbean waters and warm weather year-round, the beach destinations here are also known for their well-developed tourist infrastructure. There are endless accommodation options right on top of the beautiful coastline, including all inclusive hotels, Iberostar Beachfront Resorts and family-friendly villas.

Here are some of the best coastal holiday destinations in Mexico:

Cancun

Cancun is perhaps Mexico’s most famous coastal destination. Known for its long strip of white sand and bright blue Caribbean waters, it is a major international holiday hub. The Hotel Zone is packed with resorts and restaurants, while the city itself offers shopping centres and other attractions. Most importantly, Cancun serves as a convenient base for exploring the infamous Mayan ruins on day trips, such as Chichén Itzá.

Tulum

Further down the Riviera Maya lies Tulum, a destination famous for its bohemian atmosphere and eco-conscious approach to tourism. In addition to inclusive resorts Riviera Maya is also home to numerous boutique hotels and wellness centres. Not just that, one of the most iconic archeological sites is located right next door, in the Tulum National Park.

Playa del Carmen

Nearby, Playa del Carmen provides a nice balance between Cancun’s electric energy and Tulum’s relaxed vibe. Its central pedestrian street, Quinta Avenida, is brimming with shops and bars, creating a lively atmosphere, while the beaches are superb for swimming and snorkelling. The town’s location is also excellent for exploring the wider Riviera Maya - from here, travellers can visit cenotes (natural sinkholes) and jungle parks.

Isla Mujeres

Situated just a short ferry ride from Cancun, Isla Mujeres is a quieter alternative to the mainland’s busier resorts. The island is known for its calm waters and exotic coral reefs, providing the ideal setting for ultimate relaxation. While relatively small, Isla Mujeres certainly doesn’t have a shortage of luxury hotels and delicious eating out spots.

City holidays

Although it’s hard to compete with Mexico’s paradise beaches, the cities offer a unique experience, ideal for visitors who want to learn all about the country’s cultural depth and historical richness. From ancient ruins and colonial architecture to urban street food and modern art scenes, it’s a completely different perspective on Mexico.

Here are Mexico’s top city holiday destinations:

Mexico City

It comes as no surprise that Mexico City, the country’s capital, is at the top of this list. It’s one of the largest and most dynamic cities in the world where history is felt at every corner. Not only was Mexico City built on the Aztec ruins of Tenochtitlan, it also blends pre-Hispanic history with Spanish colonial influences and modern architecture seamlessly. And, let’s not forget the extraordinary Mexican food scene, ranging from street tacos to fine dining restaurants.

Oaxaca

Located in southern Mexico, Oaxaca is often referred to as the country’s culinary capital, thanks to its popular dishes like mole and tlayudas, as well as mezcal spirit. The city also boasts a vibrant historic centre, protected by UNESCO, featuring colourful markets, artisan workshops, street art and plazas. Moreover, Oaxaca is a good base for visiting the nearby Monte Albán archaeological site, dating back to 500 B.C.

San Miguel de Allende

San Miguel de Allende is a city filled with a thriving arts scene and well-preserved colonial architecture. Just walking around its cobblestone streets is like stepping back in time, with stunning baroque churches and pastel-coloured buildings creating a picturesque setting. Depending on the time of year, you may also get to see one of the traditional festivals or exhibitions celebrating the local artists and writers.

Guanajuato

Guanajuato is no doubt one of Mexico’s most visually striking cities, famous for its colourful hillside buildings and cosy alleyways. Once used as a major silver mining centre, today the city attracts visitors for its lively cultural scene and architecture. Not just that, Guanajuato hosts one of Latin America’s most important events - the annual Cervantino Festival.

Merida

Sitting on the Yucatan Peninsula, Merida is a great option if you want to get the best of both worlds: a city and a coastal holiday. While the city itself is packed with cultural venues, museums, grand plazas and historical attractions, the coastline and its golden beaches are just a short drive away.

Picking your Mexican adventure

With an abundance of incredible destinations, both inland and on the coast, Mexico truly has it all. If you can’t fit it all into one trip, there’s only one answer - you’ll simply have to come back again!
